Boston marriages to residents of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, 1700-1809.

The Cape list is at top, arranged geographically. The Island list is a the bottom, arranged randomly.

from:
Twenty-eighth Report of the Record Commisioners
. Boston Marriages, 1700-1751. compiled by the Registry Dept., City of Boston. Boston. Municipal Printing Office. 1898

Thirtieth Report of the Record Commisioners. Boston Marriages, 1752-1809. compiled by the Registry Dept., City of Boston. Boston. Municipal Printing Office. 1903

Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1809,  compiled by Edward W. McGlenen. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co. 1977 (in 2 volumes, 1700-1751 and 1752-1809) These replicate the books above.

In 1700 the Cape towns were Sandwich, Falmouth, Barnstable, Yarmouth, Harwich and Eastham.  Truro organized first in 1705 as Dangerfield, and in 1709 as Truro. Chatham was incorporated in 1712, and Provincetown in 1727. Wellfleet formally split from Eastham in 1763, Dennis from Yarmouth in 1794,  Orleans from Eastham in 1797, Brewster from Harwich in 1803, and Bourne came from Sandwich in 1884. Mashpee was incorporated as a town in 1870, but existed as an Indian territory since the 1600s. Mashpee, Dennis and Bourne are not mentioned in these records. Town settlement map.

These listings are mostly pulled from the location index. That indexing is not complete - I found several entries just by chance, so there are probably several more. If the people were not identified by town in the books, I have no way of knowing that they were Cape Codders, Rhode Islanders or Martians. At least some of Boston's 1764 marriage records are lost. Boston marriages of blacks were flagged with a reference to their race and free/slave status, and "servant" was apparently a euphemism for "slave," so Augustus Winthrop's servant Cicero would be married to Cabot Lodge's servant Bathsheba.  Indians, mullatoes and coloreds were also noted. The volumes lack tables of content, and the page headings are useless to misleading.

It can be seen that marriages were usually in the bride's home town.  A few of the names had a title of Mr. or Mrs., a status title. Then, as now, "Intentions of Marriage" were declared to the town clerk, and many of the records refer only to the Intentions (since the marriage ceremony itself was a religious affair, not a state concern!) Often the spelling of the names was different in the Intentions and actual Marriage record. "Out of town" marriages involved one Boston resident, and generally were made in the other person's home town.

The page numbers below refer to the 28th or 30th Reports.

* the book is unclear whether both Samson Freeman and Elizabeth Crock were from Cape Cod, or just Elizabeth. "Cape Cod" may refer to the Cape generally, or to Provincetown specifically.

The page numbers below refer to the 28th or 30th Reports. The town of residency is presumably Boston if not otherwise specified.

Sherburn/Sherborn is an old Middlesex county Mass town, but the name was also the official name for the town on Nantucket Island, from 1687-1795! The names and context for all the Sherburn listings seem likely to be from the Middlesex town, and are not included. A few listings in the place index were not actually found on the indicated pages, but I did find several more that are not in the  index.
