Notes
General:
The parish records of Beaminster, Dorset, England, include the baptism 28 August 1608 of "William, s. William Lane." If the father is the William Lane who came to Hingham, this son seems likely to have died young or to have remained in England, since he is not mentioned in his father's will.
In a shipping record dated 8 May 1635, which he discovered in the Weymouth, Dorset, port books, Peter Wilson Coldham found that William Lane and his wife and son [doubtless Andrew] emigrated on the Hopewell of Weymouth. (Cites NGSQ 71:174 (1983) and Peter Wilson Coldham, "Complete Book of Emigrants", p. 144.)
William Lane was a resident of Dorchester MA as early as 1635, according to the Lane genealogy. In 1641 William (his X mark) Lane was on a list of 71 inhabitants of Dorchester who relinquished their individual grants of Thompson's Island to the town of Dorchester for the maintenance of a Free School.
The will of William Lane of Dorchester MA is dated 28 Feb 1650/51; probated 6 July 1654; inventory 5 July 1654 [Suffolk Probate Records].
- "Unto Thomas Rider my Sonne in Law & daughter Elizabeth his wife, my new dwelling house in Dorchester with all the outhousing, garden etc. only to & for the use of my daughter & her children forever, except my great Lott in the great Lotts of Dorchester within Pale & without, Estimated 24 Acres more of lesse wch I give unto my daughter Mary Long.
"also such personal Estate as I dye possesed of shall by my Executors be thus distributed:
- "Unto sonne Thomas Linckhorne of Hingham L8 in silver.
- "Unto sonne George Lane of Hingham L8; sonne Nath Baker of Hingham L8; sonne Andrew Lane of Hingham L8; the discharge of these Legacyes in silver aforesaid, L60 due unto me upon Bill from Mr. John Glover.
"the Remainder of the Bill after L32 in Legacys (being Twenty-Eight) I give unto Mary Long my daughter together with all my personall estate, --
- "except one standing bedstead in the Parlor also one table & one chest in the house & also two fatts in the Leantoo to wett Barley in wch I give unto my sone Rider & his wife to Remaine at the house.
- "Unto Mary Long all my cattle, haye, corne, mault, Swine, Pewter, brase, beding & and all my Estate, funerall charges & Legacyes being discharged.
- "Unto ffredome Kingley who hath beene my faithful Servant 20s.
- "Mary Long to have liberty in my dwelling house after my decease for the Removall of herselfe & goods from thence such time as my executors thinke convenient, not exceeding sixe months after the day of my Buriall, also such liberty in the Barne & upon the Land concerning her haye, corne and cattle, wch is thus to be understood that it shall not at all p'judice or hinder Tho Rider from the use of the Land at all; in case I dye in such Season as the Land is to be planted or Sowne, he to have liberty so to doe and she have liberty to Reape & take what was by me planted or Sowne.
"Loving Brother Joseph ffarnsworth & John Wiswall executors. 28, 12 mo 1650. The marke H of William Lane. Signed in p'sence of Thomas Wiswall, ffreedome Kinsley" 3
