Charles A. Gorham, born in 1845, is a son of James H. and Sarah (Oliver) Gorham, and grandson of Charles Gorham. He began going to sea at the age of thirteen, and was master of vessels from 1863 until 1886. Since that time he has been a merchant in Wellfleet, where he succeeded his father in the grocery business. He married Dorcas C., daughter of Michael Rich.

"On 9 Aug 1739, he was in Gorhamtown, and acted as Proprietor's Clerk at a meeting when two hundred acres of land were voted and granted to Edmund and Stephen Phinney. He was unmarried, and his will left his estate of land in Gorhamtown to his brother and sisters, George, Abigail, Lydia, Hannah, Theodate, Desire, Ruth and Deborah. "John Eldredge died after 1750 or 1751, the date his youngest child was born."
"No probate records were found in Barnstable County for either John or Elizabeth Eldredge. Their son, John Eldredge, left a will dated 23 December 1796, proved 28 January 1797, showing that some members of the family continued to live in Barnstable County, but there was no mention of his parents in the probate records. Deeds would be helpful if they were available but those records for this period in Barnstable County were destroyed in the courthouse fire in 1827."
