"DENNIS \emdash Dorothy (Harriman) Connors Bell died peacefully in her sleep on March 30, 2010, at Liberty Commons Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center. A lifelong resident of Dennis, she was the daughter of Frederick L. Harriman Sr. and Doris (Chris) Harriman. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, Leo Martin Connors Sr. and Francis E. Bell, two of her sons, Patrick F. Connors and Kerry E. Connors and her siblings, Harriet Baker, Frederick Harriman, Jr. and Doris "Dodie"Hernandez.
A devoted educator, Mrs. Bell transferred from Yarmouth High School to Hyannis Normal School in the middle of her senior year and continued her teacher's training at Bridgewater State Teachers College, class of 1947. She earned her master's degree in reading and special education from Bridgewater State College, and did further studies in learning disabilities at SMU, Lesley and Bridgewater, while raising her six children after the death of her first husband. She held secondary education certificates in English, social studies, mathematics, reading, special education and as a state school psychologist. After serving as a substitute teacher in several Cape schools, she accepted an interim teaching position as girl's physical education teacher and coach at Orleans High School in 1958. In April of 1960, she accepted a full-time position teaching junior high which led to her 20-year career in the Harwich school system. She conducted the first successful experimental classes for potential drop-outs at Harwich High School and represented the Harwich schools at the Program Validation Systems Institute. She also taught general psychology and child psychology at Cape Cod Community College for several semesters.
Her professional affiliations during her career included serving as president of the Harwich Teachers Association for three terms, being Harwich's representative to the Washington, D.C., Fly-In and on the Teacher Advisory Committee for the study of The Comprehensive High School in Massachusetts (MACE). She was a board member for the Barnstable County Education Association, and for eight years that group's legislative contact in the 12th Congressional District. She was on the Massachusetts Teacher's Association Board of Directors, serving on several committees during her six-year tenure and as a Massachusetts Delegate to the NEA convention from 1974-1976.
Retirement afforded her time to volunteer and stay involved in her numerous interests. She was a member of the Town of Dennis Republican Committee, worked the polls for every election, was on the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School committee for many years, was a docent for the Josiah Dennis Manse, was a deacon for the Dennis Union Church and an involved proponent for the Dennis Conservation Trust.
She was a proud parent, a much-loved aunt and a dear friend to an extended family that included almost everyone she met. Her grandchildren, gardening, walking on the beach and driving were her passions. After her retirement, most often with a grandchild along for the ride, she drove a couple of cars a year to Florida and back for people flying down for the winter season. She could seldom be reached by telephone because she was usually in the garden \emdash planting, weeding or just admiring her efforts \emdash or out in the car "blowing the cobwebs out of her head."
Mrs. Bell is survived by two sons, Leo M. (Marty) Connors Jr. of Estero, Fla., and Michael F. Connors of West Yarmouth; two daughters, Kathleen A. Grenon of Orleans and Karen I. Fasnacht of Kennesaw, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren and their children and grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth on Monday, April 19. On Tuesday, April 20, a graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Dennis Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m. at the Dennis Union Church, Route 6A, Dennis, MA.
Donations in Mrs. Bell's memory may be made to the Dennis Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 67, East Dennis, MA 02641.
