Centerville — Irene Hill Hurley, 89, of Centerville, died at home on June 27, 2008, surrounded by family.
She was the wife of the late John P. Hurley Jr., who died in 2005.
She was born to Finnish immigrants who settled in Hyannis. Her parents and three sisters proudly owned and operated Hill's Dining Room and Inn for 44 years, where she was a multi-talented cook and waitress.
Along with the family restaurant business, she was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and avid Barnstable sports fan.
She is survived by her three children, Jane Lopez and her husband, Gary, and Carol Ann Friel and John P. Hurley III; her grandchildren, J. J. and his wife, Sona, Kevin and Patrick Friel and Gary and Amelia Lopez; and her great-grandson, Jackson James Friel. She also leaves many wonderful nieces and nephews, and her Cocker Spaniel, Woody.
A memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church in Hyannis.

Former Cape End Manor nurse
Katherine R. “Kay” Steele, 81, of Provincetown died Tuesday, May 9, in the Cape End Manor after a long battle with lung cancer. Her husband, former Town Moderator Francis J. Steele, died in 1974.
Born in Cambridge, daughter of the late Edward and Frances (Thomas) Hill, she came to Provincetown at nine months of age to be raised by her grandparents, Rose and Frank Thomas. She graduated from Provincetown High School in 1943 and trained as a nurse in Cambridge. She worked in the Boston area for several years, but missed the Provincetown she loved. Upon returning, she met and married her husband in 1952. She enjoyed Provincetown life, her many friends here, and was always proud of her son’s service to his country in the Army.
Mrs. Steele worked at the Corner Gift Shop, the Camera Store and Vorelli’s Restaurant. She also worked as a nurse at the Cape End Manor for several years.
Mrs. Steele was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Parish. She was one of the original members of the Pilgrim Monument Lighting Committee. After surviving throat cancer, she spent much of her time knitting hats and slippers for cancer patients.
She is survived by her son, police Officer Thomas Steele of Provincetown; a cousin with whom she grew up, Joan M. Cox of New Jersey; as well as many other cousins, nephews and nieces.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Prince Street, Provincetown. Visiting hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, May 15, at the McHoul Funeral Home, Harry Kemp Way and Howland Street, Provincetown, with Vigil Prayers at 5:30 p.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
