... Gideon was born on 21 October 1731, according to the vital records of Lewiston, Maine, where he spent his last years. This date agrees with his age, stated as 19 when he and six other settlers were surprised on 24 July 1751 by nineteen Indians and one Frenchman while haying at New Meadows. Gideon's uncle, Isaac Hinckley, was killed when he tried to flee, and Gideon and others were taken to Quebec. They were later exchanged and returned home.
