Notes
General:
In his will of 1688, Thomas Lincoln of Hingham called himself "eighty years or thereabouts." This corresponds well to baptismal date of Thomas Lincoln, son of Thomas, of Beaminster, Dorset, England. Numerous Lincoln and Lane entries are found in the Beaminster parish register. So while Savage doubted the tradition that Thomas Lincoln came from the west of England, these records appear to support the tradition, as does the fact that William Lane, with his wife and son, emigrated 8 May 1635 from Weymouth, Dorset, England to Dorchester.
Thomas Lincoln was granted a houselot at Hingham 3 July 1636: "granted unto Thomas Lincoln, cooper, five acres of land at the west end of the town for a house-lot, butting on the town street eastward, and upon the common westward, and with the land of Francis Smith northward, and with the land of Thomas Nichols southward." This lot he later sold or exchanged for one on North, near Beal St., which became his homestead. Thomas also had a small triangular lot of land granted him subsequent to the first distribution of lots in 1635, at what was later the corner of North and Lincoln Streets. This triangular lot he later gave, with malt-house, to his youngest son, Benjamin. He was made freeman in 1638. The records call him 'cooper' and 'malster.' At the time the present meeting-house of the First Parish was erected (1680-81), Thomas Lincoln, cooper, was one of the five elderly gentlemen to whom was assigned a sitting "in the seate under y' pulpit" while for Mrs. Lincoln, a place was allotted "in the second seate next ye pew."
Thomas died at his residence on North Street (West Hingham).
The will of Thomas Lincoln was dated 13 July 1688, proved 27 October 1692. He mentions three sons and one daughter. Joseph inherited the home place. Joseph's son Nehemiah came next into possession, and having no issue, he left it to his nephew Israel Lincoln. A large part of the original homestead is still in possession of this branch of the family in 1893.
