PROVINCETOWN - Annie V. (Meads) Oliver, 97, of Provincetown, died on Sunday, July 19, at Seashore Point in Provincetown. Mrs. Oliver was the wife of the late John P. Oliver.
Born in Provincetown on July 27, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Taves) Meads. She was one of 13 children and when she was very young both of her parents died. She was raised by her two older sisters, Maggie and Mamie, who took most of the responsibility of raising the younger children.
As a child, Oliver worked constantly to help support the family. Her first job was at the Cold Storage Fish Plant. She also earned money washing and ironing clothes for other families in town.
She worked at the Provincetown Inn as a chambermaid for many years and later at the Holiday Inn, retiring at the age of 81. When she wasn't working she would spend her free time knitting, crocheting and sewing. She put her hobbies to good use, making all of the clothes for her two daughters and many dresses for her granddaughters. She also made wedding dresses for both daughters and one granddaughter.
She was an avid bowler and she loved to travel. When the off season would arrive she would plan her trips, which always ended with a visit to her sister Betty in Florida. While in her 70s, she and her grandson Stephen visited Portugal because she wanted to see the part of the world that her family came from.
Oliver served her community as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the 4-H club. She was a life-long parishioner and communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Parish and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. For Oliver, life was about family and making the best of the life she was given.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise Crawley of Provincetown, and her son-in-law Phil Roderick of Provincetown; her grandchildren, Anna Leister of Braintree, Phil Roderick of Provincetown, Stephen Roderick of Truro, Joanne Belmore of Yarmouth and Karen Silva of Provincetown; great-grandchildren Tyler, Sean and Sara Roderick, Annie and Michael Leister, Savannah, Cassidy and Jadzia Belmore and Christopher Silva. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Joanne Roderick and grandmother of the late Mark V. Roderick and the late Randy D. Roderick and mother-in-law of the late Warren R. Crawley Jr.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church, 11 Prince St., Provincetown, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 23. Visiting will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass at Gately-McHoul Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown. Interment will take place in St. Peter Cemetery, Provincetown. James Francis Meads Sr., Provincetown’s former fire chief, died quietly in his home on Monday, Jan. 9. He was 80.
He was the husband of Louise (Smith) Meads.
Born in Provincetown, Meads was the son of the late Manuel and Christine (Enos) Meads, and he was a graduate of Provincetown High School.
A WW II veteran, he served in both the European and Pacific theaters and participated in the Invasion of Normandy. He was a member of the Lewis A. Young Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Familiar to most as the town’s former fire chief, Meads was a lifelong resident who devoted much of his time to serving the community. For over 40 years he worked as a light and power lineman and still found time to serve on the local fire and rescue squads. He was one of the founding members of the Provincetown Rescue Squad, and he started “Sparkies,” a group of junior firemen who later went on to join the fire department. He gradually worked his way up through the ranks of that department to become its chief.
His family members say that he “dabbled in everything that he could.” He coached the Yankees Little League team. He served on the first committee that lit the Pilgrim Monument, a tradition that continues today. And he was involved with numerous town boards, including the School Committee and the Licensing Board. He served on the latter for five years.
In November 1996, Meads was honored at Town Meeting for his years of public service.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by a son, James F. Meads Jr., of Truro; two daughters, Amanda Lee Morris, of Truro, and Cynthia Louise Doherty, of Bellingham; a brother, Phillip Meads, and sister, Rita Medeiros, both of Provincetown; grandchildren Joel, Ché, Audra and Amy Carreiro, Jenna and Jacob Morris, and Amanda Doherty; great-grandchildren Ariel, Dylan and Brooke Carreiro, Nathaniel Cyzoski, and Jocelyn Pellitier; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Audrey Lee, and a brother, Richard Meads, predecease him.
A Funeral Mass, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at Provincetown Town Hall, Commercial St., Provincetown.
Visiting hours at the McHoul Funeral Home at Harry Kemp Way and Howland Street, Provincetown, are Thursday, Jan. 12, from 4 to 8 p.m., with Vigil Prayers at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
