Notes
General:
Nickerson genealogy:
"684. ENOS6 NICKERSON (Enos5, William4, Thomas3, William2, William), was the son of Enos (#259) and his first wife, who may have been a Chase girl. In his Revolutionary Pension Papers (W 13770) he says that he was born "16 Jan. 1761 at a place called the Oblong in Massachusetts." The Oblong was in New York (see Part 1, p. 34). His father lived there as is shown in Land Records of his purchase and sale of property in 1749-50. Enos probably returned to Harwich, MA with the family before 1769 when his father married Elizabeth Ellis there. Enos died in March 1839 at age 82 (G.S.) in West Harwich. On June 26, 1894 the Harwich Independent reported, "Remains of Enos Nickerson, an old Revolutionary Soldier, and those of his wife were removed from the Johnson property and buried in Pine Grove Cemetery." In Aug. 14, 1894, in an article on that cemetery, "A board painted white on which something was written in lead pencil rested against the ancient slab. The writing was deciphered as follows: 'Enos Nickerson, born 1757, entered Washington's army at 18 and served his country during the 7 years war with England. Discharged from American Army at age 25. d. 1839'. Buried upon his farm near his late dwelling near the Hotel Belmont (Johnson property). Buried Pine Grove June I 894. His wife, Deborah, died in 1 854 age 82. The land taken by the new Hotel Belmont, where these old people were buried, made it necessary to move the remains to the cemetery. These old people are remembered by some now living in the village, and the marble slabs on the bluffs have been known landmarks for years."

He married, int. 25 Dec. 1779, Yarmouth, MA, DEBORAH CHASE, b. 1769, Harwich; daughter of William and Mercy (Chase) Chase; d. 26 Dec. 1854, Harwich. They lived on the west side of Herring River in West Harwich where the Belmont Hotel now is, on land originally..."
