HIST: Lt. John (2) (s/o George 1), born ±1635-6, ±44 in Jan. 1679-80. Cape Porpus 1666, a partner with Nicholas Cole (23) in fishing and oar making, and there in 1668 he had a house and wife Mary. The partners (he and Wells) bought at Merriconeag in Nov. 1672, built and lived there until forced off by the war, as old friends deposed (see Doc. Hist. 23: 204), though York granted land to him and John Penwill in 1674 and he was "now of York" in Nov. that year. On Cape Porpus jury 1686; grand jury 1680-1; Assemblyman 1682; Lt. "now in H. M. immediate service" 1688; chosen first selectman, town clerk and lot-layer Jan. 1688-9; ordered to Boston on Apr. following to account for discharging the garrison. Sometime of York 24 Feb. 1689-90, perhaps at Salisbury, where he died in a few years and son James administered. In May 1720 when son Joshua took administration the inventory included: 600 acres on
Chebeague Island, 1000 acres on Merriconeag Neck, 100 + 12 acres at Arundel. Deeds indicate 7 children.

"Barnabas Paine, Esq., of Truro, son of Thomas and Hannah of that place, was a man of distinction in Truro. He married Mary Purrington June 25, 1724, and died at Truro, May 25, 1768, in his 63d year. His wife Mary died Dec. 22, 1768, in the 62d year of her age. Much relating to the ancestral head of the family, was, it is said, by him transmitted to his nephew, Dr. Barnabas Paine of Amenia, N. Y. His children were:
1. Elizabeth,4 born Aug. 11, 1725, married Ambrose Snow, April 2, 1747, died before 1768.
2. Barnabas, born Sept. 24, 1727, married Hannah Vickery, died Dec. 10, 1757, at Portsmouth Harbor, " old England," "being carried there by John Stott, commander of a man-of-war schooner called the Gibraltar Prize."
3. Mercy, born April 11, 1729, married : Rich, died in 1768.
4. Mary, born Jan. 28, 1731-2, mar. Samuel Lombard, Nov. 9, 1761, died Oct. 4, 1758, aged 26.
5. Joshua, born Aug. 3, 1734, died July 5, 1736.
6. Ruth, born April 23,1736, married Ebenezer Rich, Oct. 20, 1754.
