In 1836 he was botanist with the Wilkes Exploring Expedition, in 1847-1849 paymaster in the United States Army in California, and afterwards secretary of the United States Legation in Mexico until 1863. He lived some years in Washington, DC, where he maintained a botanical garden of great value and interest." 4

"Wellfleet
William S Rich, 93, the oldest resident of Wellfleet, died at his home on Friday morning following a brief illness.
Mr Rich has been associated with the fishing industry in various capacities, at one time shipping before the mast on mackerel schooners, working on oyster boats and other local craft. He was also employed by D. Atwood & Co. shellfish dealers and worked at men's furnishing factory here at one time.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marion O. Rich, and a daughter, Mrs. Florence Aulk [Walter Auld] of Seekonk, and three grandchildren."
