"George Baker, born in France in 1823, came to Boston in 1834, and to Wellfleet in 1836. He followed the sea from 1836 until 1872, twenty-five years as master of vessels, and now keeps a lumber and general builders' supplies store at Wellfleet. He is having a cranberry bog made, which will be the largest bog in this town. It will contain twenty acres, and will cost ten thousand dollars complete. He married Mercy H., daughter of Thomas Higgins. Their five living children are: Thankful H., Mercy H., Margaret S., Clara E. and Ada A. Four died: two in infancy, and Maria T. and George." - Deyo, 1890Medical:
The Census reports that George was born in Germany, and this discrepancy is resolved by noting that he was born in Walschbronn, Moselle, Lorraine, territory that was sometimes controlled by France and sometimes by Germany.
Biographical Sketches of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Mass., Boston 1901
"George Baker native of France b. September 4, 1823. At the age of 8 sailed from Havre on board merchant ship for Boston. Employed in sailors' boarding house, then shipped on fishing vessel called "Leonidas" commanded by Capt. David Baker who brought him to Wellfleet. Found a home in the family of Isaiah R. Baker with whom he resided until he attained his majority.
When 13 years old he engaged in fishing industry and at 21 was master of a vessel. Followed the sea for 40 years, 25 of which he was a master mariner. He was capt of the following vessels "Tiara," "Metor", "Maria Theresa," "Sarah E. Lewis" and The "RR Higgins" besides the packet he ran for 6 years from Wellfleet to Boston. He weathered many storms including the great gale of Oct 1841 and on one occasion during the war while in the Chesapeake Bay, he narrowly escaped being captured by Confederates.
In 1865 he abandoned the sea and about 1870 established himself in the coal business, selling out later he engaged in the lumber business eventually c. 1894 selling out to Thomas Allen Higgins.
George Baker was interested in Cranbery culture."
Research by Marie Odile Peres of Strasbourg.

Baker, vice-president of the Manufacturer's Trust Company, New York City, at an afternoon wedding on June 9 at Mme. Atwood's home in Wellfleet, it was learned following the announcement of the engagement by Mr. and Mrs. Simeon Atwood of Orleans, brothe and sister-in-law.
Mme. Atwood is the daughter of the late Captain and Mrs. Simeon Atwood of Wellfleet and spent the early years of her life there. She was educated in the schools of Dorchester and LaSalle Seminary. She began to sing at an early age and soon made appearances throughout New England and with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
After several years of study in Europe, she returned to this country and became one of the stars of the Metropolitan Opera. Mme. Atwood cancelled her Metropolitan contrtact, and became the first grand opera artist to step from the Metropolitan into radio exclusively, opening the Times Square Studio of the NBC at that time. She has made many appearances on appreciation hours.
Last year Mme. Atwood opened the first season of the Cape Cod Institute of Music in Osterville. The institute now forms her chief interest. She has worked untirlingly this year, remaining at Wellfleet all winter to organize music courses this summer.
Mr. Baker was born and educated in Ohio. He is vice-president of the Manufacturer's Trust Company of New York. He takes an active interest in religious and civic sociaties and is a patron of arts and music. He has been a frequent visitor to Cape Cod.
An afternoon wedding for the immediate members of the family will take place at Miss Atwood's homestead in Wellfleet June 9. The nuptials will be followed by a reception for a host of friends from all parts of the country.
The ceremony will be performed by Rev. Joseph Vasey, pastor of the Wellfleet Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Elsie M. Bosch of New York CIty. After a ten-day wedding trip the couple will return to Cape Cod where Miss Atwood will continue her work with the Cape Cod Institute of Music."
