NORTH CHATHAM - Edward M. Baker, 83, died Dec. 23 at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Chatham. He was the husband of the late Janet Lizziebelle (Chase) Baker, who died in July 2005.
Mr. Baker was born in Taunton, raised and educated in Taunton and Chatham. He graduated from Chatham High School in 1940. He spent four years in the Army, serving in the South Pacific. He married in 1946.
He worked in various capacities at Bearse's Store in Chatham for 17 years, then for the Chatham Water Co. for 22 years. And most recently for Whiteley Plumbing and Heating in Chatham. He was a charter member of The Brown-James-Buck VFW Post 8067 in Chatham, a member of the American Legion, the Massachusetts State Guard, a special police officer for the town of Chatham, and was involved in Boy Scouts and youth hockey. He also was a baseball coach and a figure-skating fan.
He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and Western paperback books. He was a member of Larry's PX coffee club, enjoyed clamming, fishing and boating and North Beach, Chatham.
Mr. Baker is survived by two daughters, Claire E. LeBlanc of West Chatham and Christine E. Fulcher of Brewster; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
