"Yarmouth VRs 'Samuel Smith and Mercy Bacor were joined in marriage the 17th day of February 1713 per Danel Greenleaf, Cler' The confusion with the families of men named Samuel, John and Isaac Smith among inhabitants of Eastham, Harwich, and Monomoit is understandable. Samuel's will was dated April 9, 1765, and proved October 10, 1768, calling himself of Harwich and mentioning wife Marcy, sons William, Charles, Samuel and Isaac; daughter Thankful Chase; and children of deceased daughter Jane Laha. It is filed in Vol. 13, p. 369 of Barnstable probate records. He named William as executor directing him to make provisions for others and for the care of his wife. Samuel left the traditional five shillings to each of his children and all of his wearing apparel to his sons Charles and William. Barnstable deeds have records of purchases and sales by the descendants of Samuel with references to Crocker's Neck, Oak Island, and Gage's Way. Bell's Neck Road is the location of the Smith family cemetery, probably where Samuel and Mercy are buried with others. Three gravestones have survived--those of Samuel's grandson Samuel by his son William and that Samuel's son, Amos and his wife Lavina Gage. They are noted in the History of Harwich and at capecodgravestones.com. Bell's Neck Road intersects the former Gage's Way, and Gage's Way was changed to Smith Street."
