Revolutionary War: Shebna Sweat is listed among men drafted to serve in the Continental Army to the credit of the town of Wellfleet but who paid fines in lieu of service, as returned by Winslow Lewis, Chairman of Selectmen and Committee of Wellfleet, to Joseph Otis, Brigadier of Barnstable County, 8 September 1777. Also: he was a Private in Capt. Joseph Smith's detachment of militia from the town of Wellfleet, Col. Freeman's Regiment; service, 2 days; detachment marched to Falmouth 10 September 1778 by order of Brig. Joseph Otis on an alarm. [Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, Vol. 15, page 287]
