Notes
General:
Smith estimated his birth is estimated as about 1611; Anderson estimated it as about 1614, based on a grant of land in 1635, and the estimated date of marriage.
Nathaniel Baker had land at Hingham in 1635. Either he or his wife was admitted to the Hingham church by July 1639 when their daughter Mary was baptized. On 9 April 1642, Nathaniel Baker was admitted as a planter at Nantasket (Hull). On 17 June 1661, Nathaniel Baker of Hingham, together with Capt. Joshua Hubbard, Lt. John Smith and Sgt. John Leavitt, purchased a tract of land from the Indians. He served as selectman at Hingham 1 December 1650, and as constable 8 March 1668/1669.
On 15 January 1672/1673, Nathaniel Baker of Hingham granted land "for the entire love and respect" to son-in-law John Loring and his wife Mary. On 13 July 1680 Nathaniel Baker of Hingham, yeoman, granted land to his wife's kinsman, Andrew Lane of Hingham, wheelwright.
He took the Oath of Allegiance in Hingham 29 October 1678.
The will of Nathaniel Baker of Hingham is dated 11 May 1682, proved 25 July 1682. He made bequests to the children of his son-in-law John Loring (his grand children), giving them large tracts of land at Ware river, Turkey hill and elsewhere. He provided for wife Sarah, for two Indian servants, and 10s apiece to the children of his brother Nicholas late of Scituate. Wife Sarah and grandson Joseph Loring were to be executors; Deacon John Leavitt, Capt. John Thaxter, Cornet Mathew Cushing and John Jacob were to be overseers. Inventory dated 23 June 1682 totalled £1273 19s., of which £1074 was real estate. On 12 February 1696/1697 letters of administration were granted to Thomas Loring of Hingham, sadler, on the remaining estate of his grandfather Nathaniel Baker, sometime of Hingham, yeoman, as both Sarah Baker and Joseph Loring (executors) were deceased. On 20 April 1697 a new inventory was made of the estate left remaining to be administered; this totalled £714 4s., of which £706 14s. was real estate. Most of that estate was distributed in three legacies: to "Jacob Loring, grandchild of the deceased, £50; to Mary Loring (now Jones) £25; and to Rachel Loring £25." 40
