Notes
General:
Thomas was born in Barnstable. He removed with his father to Falmouth and was of Falmouth at the time of his marriage. He was named as a landholder in Falmouth in 1691, but not subsequently. About that time he removed to Eastham, where he died. He was buried in the ancient burying ground in Eastham. His stone reads: Here Lyes Ye Body / Of Thomas Lewes / Died March ye 19, 1718, / in ye 64 / th year of his age. This date is old style -- which would be March 19, 1719 new style.Marriage Notes (Joan)
The will of Thomas Lewis of Eastham is dated 15 January 1712/1713, proved 23 April 1718/1719. He appointed his wife Jane Lewes sole Executrix, names oldest son Thomas, sons John, George, Nathaniel and Benjamin, and four daughters. The widow's estate was settled 25 April 1720/1721.
Since we lack a date for Sarah's death, we can only guess at which children are by which wife. Otis obtained the names of the three older children from the probate records, and thought they were probably born in Falmouth, and the remaining seven in Eastham. The move to Eastham about 1691 may have coincided with his marriage to Jane. 13

"Mr Thomas Lewis died Apr 29th 1816," but it may have been another man. 19

Notes
General:
Thomas came with his father as a child. They were first at Plymouth, then at Scituate, and in 1639 the family removed to Barnstable. In 1654, the year after he married Mary Davis, he owned the easterly part of his father's houselot, adjoining the lot of John Davis. On "Quinque Die, April 1656" he bought the ancient tavern and twelve acre houselot of Thomas Lumbart, Sr. for L20. This tavern was the first built in Barnstable, and he still owned it in April 1661. On 1 June 1658 he was admitted freeman.
His name appears on the lists of freemen at Barnstable until 7 June 1686 when Suckenesset was incorporated as the town of Falmouth. In 1668 he was admitted a resident of Suckenesset; that indicates he had become a proprietor, but not necessarily that he lived there, for about half the original grantees were non-resident proprietors, and Thomas was not among the original grantees. On 23 July 1677 he had lands alloted to him at Little Neck, near Woods' Hole. He built a dwelling house there, which he sold with the land to Jonathan Hatch, Sr. on 25 February 1689/1690. He was clerk of the proprietors from July 1685 to 26 March 1691, and perhaps longer. He died in Falmouth after 1703.
Savage and Deane say that Thomas removed to Swansea as one of the first settlers and was Selectman there. They also say that by wife Hannah he had children Samuel, born 23 April 1673; and Hepzibah, born 15 November 1674. Otis disagreed, saying that Thomas Lewis of Lynn, son of Edmund, whose wife was Hannah Baker, removed to Swansea about 1670. Torrey shows that Thomas Lewis of Lynn, Bristol RI, and Swansea married Hannah Baker 11 November 1659. Torrey also shows that Thomas Lewis of Barnstable married Mary Davis 15 June 1653, and that Mary died in 1687. Savage shows children James, Thomas, Mary and Samuel born to Thomas and Mary 1654-1662, and gives no date for Mary's death. Deane lists James, Thomas and Mary, and says more children were probably born at Barnstable. He also gives no death date for wife Mary. But clearly Hannah Baker could not be the second wife of Thomas Lewis of Barnstable, and it seems likely that Otis was right and the man at Swansea was Thomas Lewis of Lynn. 13
