Great Migration Begins:Marriage Notes (Grace)
"RALPH SMITH
ORIGIN Hingham, Norfolk
MIGRATION: 1633
FIRST RESIDENCE Charlestown
REMOVES: Hingham 1637, Eastham by 1653
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: He or his wife must have been admitted to Hingham church by 1641, since baptisms of his children began appear-ing then.
FREEMAN Oath of fidelity at Eastham, 1657 [PCR 8:184]. EDUCATION: His inventory included "1 Bible & psalm book" valued at 5s. 6d.
OFFICES: Eastham constable, 6 June 1660 [PCR 3:188]. On 7 May 1661 "Ralph Smith, for lying in and about the neglect of his duty, about a warrant directed to him, and concerning the seeing or not seeing a whale, and other misorderly carriages tending to disturbance in the town of Eastham, was fined twenty shillings" [PCR 3:213].
ESTATE: On 27 October 1685 administration on the estate of Ralph Smith was granted to relict Grace Smith and son Samuel Smith, all ol Eastham [PCR 6:175], with the administration bond dated 2 November 1685[Scrapbook 54].
The inventory of "Ralph Smith deceased September 14, 1685," was un-dated and untotalled, and included £45 in real estate: "one room of the dwelling house from the ground to the ridge with a leanto upon the side with the houselot containing seven acres with an orchard, an old barn & six acres of upland on the other side of the cove," £32; and "a parcel of meadow on the westerly side of the boat meadow," £13 [PCLR 5:360, 362].
Thomas Smith complained that "the bounds of his land [at Eastham] ... that was formerly his father's, Ralph Smith, are gone to decay," and on 22 March 1694 a committee settled the bounds [NEHGR 26:438, citing OrleansTR 13:199].
BIRTH By about 1616 (assuming that he came over as a servant, and was twenty-one at the time of his trial admission by the town of Charlestown).
DEATH. Eastham 14 September 1685 (from inventory).
ASSOCIATIONS: Daniel Cushing, in his list of early emigrants from Hingham, Norfolk, England, to Hingham, Massachusetts Bay, listed among those who arrived in 1633 "Ralph Smith came from Old Hingham and lived in this town," and reported him to have a household of one person at arrival [NEHGR 15:25].
C0MMENTS: On 3 January 1636/7 the town of Charlestown ordered that "Ralph Smith was admitted a month upon trial" [ChTR 43], no further mention of him is seen in Charlestown records.
The fact that Ralph Smith was unmarried on arrival in 1633, does not appear again until early 1637 when he is given trial admission to Charlestown, and does not marry until about 1640 indicates that he probably came over as a servant, by his placement in Daniel Cushing's list it may be that he was in the household of Edmund Hubbard Senior.
On 4 December 1638 [blank] Ibrooke and Ralph Smythe were in some kind of trouble and were attached by the General Court, but when Ralph Smith appeared 5 March 1638/9, he was discharged. Ibrooke was charged for tempting two or more maids to uncleanness, but whether the two men's offenses were related or not is uncertain [MBCR 1:247, 249].
As noted above, some years after Ralph Smith arrived in Eastham he was chosen constable, but he was soon found to be unfit for the position. He continued to have difficulties in dealing with his fellow man. On 3 March 1662/3 "Ralph Smith, of Eastham, for breaking the peace in strik-ing of William Walker, is fined 3s. 4d." [PCR 4:34]. In May 1665 "Ralph Smith, of Eastham, was fined, for telling of a lie, 10s." [PCR 4:89]. (See also PCR 4:175, 5:31, 7:69, 149.)"
------------------------------------
PCR 3:213 (check)
"Ralph Smith, for lying in and about the neglect of his duty, about a warrant directed to him, and concerning the seeing or not seeing a whale, and other misorderly carriages tending to disturbance in the town of Eastham, was fined twenty shillings."
---------------------------------------
He arrived on the Elizabeth Bonaventure, in 1633, John Graves, Master. The ship left Yarmouth, Norfolk, the first week in May and arrived at Boston (Charlestown) on June 15, "with ninety five passengers." Ralph Smith arrived alone, with no family. One of 14 passengers from Hingham.
"came from Old Hingham, 1633 and lived in this town" sources placed against the name the figure 1 which signifies that Ralph came alone.
Ralph appears in Hingham in 1637 when he drew a house-lot on Bachelor (Main St) at or near "Pear Tree Hill". He continued to reside there until he removed to Eastham, Mass.
The, early settlers of the present town of Hingham, Mass., were mostly from Hingham, County of Norfolk, England The colony records call him " Ralph Smyth," and as late as Sept. 22, 1652, the probate records for Suffolk Co. say "Ralph Smyth," "of Hingham." (N. E. History and Genealogical Register, Vol. viii. p. 61.) He was of Eastham, in the Plymouth colony, in 1657, in which year he took the "oath of fidelity." See Plymouth Colony Records, Lib. 8, folio 184.
The name is here and ever after on the Records, "Smith." Was constable of Eastham in 1660, and in 1664, was trading with "Josias Hubbert, of Hingham." Volume 6, folio 175, Plymouth Colony Records, has the following "court order." Oct. 27, 1685"
"Administration is granted by this court to Grace Smith, the relict of Ralph Smith, and Samuell Smith, son to the Ralph Smith, all of the town of Eastham, in the colony of New-Plymouth, in New-England, deceased, on all the goods and chattells of the Ralph Smith".
The record of the marriage of Ralph, is not to be found, and the indications are that Grace was not the mother of his children. [no evidence presented that she was not] Hobart, in his diary of Hingham affairs, gives valuable informoltion concerning this family; viz.:
2. i. SAMUEL Smitb, bap. July 11, 1641.
3. ii. JOHN, son of Ralph Smith, bap. July 23, 1644.
4. iii. DANIEL Smith, bap. March 2, 1647.
There can be but little doubt that Thomas, of Eastham, who in 1690, June 24, took at Barnstable, "ye oath of a freeman," was also a son of Ralph, but having made very careful examination and finding no documentary proof of the same, we omit a record of his family, simply stating for the benefit of any person that may be interested, that his eldest son, Ralph, was born in Eastham, Oct. 23, 1682, and Thomas, Jan. 16, 1687, also at Eastham; this last settled in Truro, from whom come, Gamaliel 1715, Barzilla 1717, Gamaliel 1744, Gamaliel 1772, Barzilla 1775, and numerous others, the family being highly respectable and influential in the affairs of Truro for many years. Ralph appears in Hingham in 1637 when he drew a house-lot on Bachelor (Main St) at or near "Pear Tree Hill". He continued to reside there until he removed to Eastham, Mass. 9
Great Migration Begins:
"MARRIAGE Grace_____, who survived him. (Most sources claim that Ralph Smith had two wives, and the children were by the first. There are also claims that his wife Grace was widow of THOMAS HATCH of Barnstable, but his widow had apparently died by 1662. The only wife seen in the records for Ralph Smith is Grace.)
