Dana S. Brown, 78
East Syracuse, N.Y. – Dana S. Brown, 78, of East Syracuse, N.Y., died on July 29, 2008, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in West Yarmouth, the son of Carlton E. and M. Gladys Brown. He graduated from Barnstable High School and Wentworth Institute in Boston.
He served in Korea with the 78th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gunnery Battalion and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1954 with the rank of Sergeant First Class.
He worked for General Electric from 1955 to 1962. In 1962, he formed Dana S. Brown Company Inc., providing management consulting to major corporations and data processing to local companies.
He was an insurance sales representative for Lutheran Brotherhood and Modern Woodman Fraternal Insurance Companies.
He was a member and Past Master of Onondaga Lodge #802 F&AM, and in 1972, started publishing "The Word," the Masonic newspaper for the Onondaga Districts. He donated the publication to the Masonic Service Bureau.
In 1976, he began publishing "On The Trail," a monthly newspaper for snowmobilers in New York State in cooperation with the New York State Snowmobile Association.
After retiring, Mr. Brown worked at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, in plant engineering. He was a member of Believers' Chapel in Cicero, N.Y.
He was predeceased by a baby daughter, Nancy, in 1951, and a daughter, Jeryl-Ann (Jeri), in 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Catherine; daughters Jody Brown, Janel Hansen, and Juleen (Peter) Iannotta, all of Syracuse; sons Dana Jr. (Debra) of Richmond, Va., David (Amy) of Charlotte, N.C., and Darin (Sandra) of Madison, N.H.; 25 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly Winston of Harwich Port; nephews Gregory Winston of Harwich, Wayne (Susan) Winston of Pittsford, Vt.; nieces Stephanie (Michael) Russo of Nashua, N.H., and Pamela (James) Piersall of Yarmouthport; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Believers' Chapel, Northern Boulevard and Thompson Road, Cicero, N.Y., on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m.
Delaney-Greabell-Adydan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

"Captain David Brown, one of Boston's oldest sea captains, died Wednesday morning, at the residence of his brother in Newtonville, aged 75 years. Captain Brown was born in Provincetown in 1801, and made his first voyage when but 14 years of age. At twenty-two he took command of his first ship, and during the past half century has sailed some of the finest ships owned in Boston. His first voyage was made in the employ of J.H. Pearson & Co., and susequently he commanded vessels in the employ of Silas Pierce & Co., W. Worthington & Co., and G C Lord. [Boston Traveler."
