Notes
General:
John Bumpas was in court on June 8, 1651, apparently as a 15 year old boy and was censured for "idle and lascivous" conduct and sentenced to a whipping. He was made "freeman" in 1657, giving him the right to vote and hold office. In 1673 he was listed as an approved settler in Scituate and was assigned a part of the common land. In 1676 his house and barn were burned by Indians. John moved to Rochester - that part now Wareham - sometime from 1683 through 1685. He was seemingly a wealthy landowner in Wareham. Along with his brother, Jacob, John had two saw mills in Wareham that were operated by water wheels.
