Parents

         Mother: Rebecca Mayo (1710-Abt 1776)

Notes
General:
In 1746 he moved with his parents to Middletown CT. After marrying, he lived on a farm just west of Pocotapaug Lake in East Hampton. In 1780 he was on a committee appointed to provide necessities for the Continental army, and assisted in provisioning troops on Long Island, narrowly escaping capture at one time. In 1794 he purchased land in Freehold, Albany Co, NY. 9 May 1778 he deeded land in East Hampton to his son Isaac, and in 1795 gave another parcel to his son Willard. He was large framed, tall and muscular, filled with a spirit of entrprise, and reckless of danger. When the Revolution broke out he equipped a vessel which he commanded himself, and which preyed on British convoys. His vessel was captured by a British ship and he and one of his men were made prisoners and confined on board. He suspected from what he saw and heard that they would be executed one morning, so told the other prisoner, and prepared to escape and swim to shore. The other man thought the attempt desparate, but Sears replied that he'd rather trust his neck in the water than the rope. They eluded the guard about midnight, and let themselves into the water. There they were discovered and fired upon from the ship. Sears reached shore, but his man did not. Sears took a boat, went out and picked him up, and they both escaped. He immediately went to work fitting out another vessel. After the war he was actively engaged in mechanical and agricultural pursuits. He was greatly beloved. His house stood till 1848, when it was taken down.
