Barnstable -- Dora Frances (White) (Phinney) Nelson, 102, always known to friends and acquaintances as Frances, died at the home of her granddaughter, Deborah Erb, on Jan. 14, 2008.

Born on Oct. 24, 1905, in Yarmouth, she was a Cape Cod native and lived here all her life. She was the daughter of the late Augusta Matilda (Berg) White and Herbert L. White. She attended Yarmouth public schools and graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1923. She was one of a class of seven.

She married Henry M. Phinney in 1924, with whom she had three children, Henry, Helen and Marion. Her husband, Henry, was lost at sea in 1944. She later married William M. Nelson in 1946 and had a fourth child, Donna. He died in 1952.

She always was a hard worker all her life and worked at various jobs until joining the U.S. Postal Service in the 1960s. She was known by many Barnstable residents during her years at the Barnstable post office. Never having obtained a driver's license her entire life, she was often seen walking from her home on Phinney's Lane to the post office in the village. She worked for the postal service until retiring at 75.

She loved to crochet and spent time after retiring making many beautiful doilies and afghans for her family. She also had a great love for animals and always had a kitty by her side. She always had time to visit with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed baking and made the best apple pies ever. She loved the Red Sox and followed all their ball games. Everyone was so grateful that she was able to see the two World Series wins.

In later years, she was cared for by her daughter, Marion, and her granddaughter, Deborah.

She is survived by a son, Henry Phinney of Hyannis; two daughters, Helen (Phinney) Levesque of West Yarmouth, and Donna (Nelson) Gannon and her husband Thomas of Hyannis; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her brother, Carl L. White, daughter, Marion (Phinney) Erb and her husband Vernon, and her grandchild, David Erb. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service was held at Cummaquid Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601, or to MSPCA, 1577 Falmouth Road, Centerville, MA 02632.
