"Capt. Eugene Young and crew of the schooner Eddie Atwood arrived home last week, and report the vessel struck a sunken wreck and immediately went ashore, on the morning of Feb. 7th. After trying to get the schooner off by throwning over her cargo, and other means, she was stripped of sails and rigging, she being under water at the time of leaving her. The crew were taken to Norfolk, where they were under obligations to Capts. John E. Kemp, Isaiah Barker and James Paine for kindnesses and favors received. "Death of E.O. Young
Mr. Eugene Oscar Young died at his home on Friday after being in failing health for several years. He was born at Yarmouth Jan. 26, 1853, but has lived in Wellfleet for many years. He leaves a widow and one son, Howard, and a daughter, Octavia.
Funeral services were held from his residence at 2 p.m. on Monday.
Among those from out of town to attend the services were Mrs. Walter Higgins of Attleboro, Mrs. Benjamin Hall and daughter Jennie of Melrose, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Young, Boston, Mr. Howard Young, attached to medical department, Camp Upton, L.I., and Miss Octavia Young of Boston, also Mr. and Mrs Walter Rich of Truro.
Mr. Young was for many years a surfman in the Cahoon Hollw Life Saving station at this point, and was well and favorably known among the townspeople, as he was of a cheery disposition and had a ready smile for acquaintances and friends wherever met. In recent years he has been employed by Mr. Lorenzo D. Baker, taking care of his various cottages and properties in and about Wellfleet.
It is a strange co-incidence that word should be recieved here Sunday of the death in Peabody of Capt. Nehemiah Hayman, who was a native of this place and was for some time on the Life Saving station with Mr. Young. Mr Hayman moved his family from here to take a captaincy of the Gay Head station. Since then he has retired and at the time of death owned a farm where he lived in Peabody. He leaves a widow, who was also a native of this place, and sister to Mr. Solomon Harding, also several children."
