Notes
Marriage Notes (Job Cole)
Great Migration Begins:
JOB COLE

ORIGIN: Unknown
MIGRATION: 1633
FIRST RESIDENCE: Plymouth
REMOVES: Duxbury, Yarmouth by 1643, Eastham by 1648
FREEMAN: Propounded for freeman 5 March 1638/9, and admitted 3 March 1639/40 [PCR 1:117, 140]. In the "1639" list of Plymouth freemen, Job Cole is entered first in the Duxbury section, then is crossed off and added to the Yarmouth section of the same list [ PCR 8:175, 176]. He is then found in the Eastham section of the lists of Plymouth freemen of 1658, 29 May 1670 and 1 [blank] 1683/4 [ PCR 5:278, 8:202, 208].
EDUCATION: Signs his name as witness to a deed [ PCR 12:25].
OFFICES: Duxbury constable (replaced during the year), 2 March 1640/1 [ PCR 2:9]. Plymouth grand jury, 6 June 1643 [ PCR 2:56]. Deputy for Yarmouth to Plymouth General Court (apparently replaced during the year), 5 June 1644 [ PCR 2:72] "Naussit" [Eastham] constable, 7 June 1648 [ PCR 2:124]. Eastham surveyor of highways, 6 June 1654 [ PCR 3:50].
In Yarmouth section of 1643 Plymouth list of men able to bear arms [ PCR 8:194].
ESTATE: Granted "a parcel of land on Duxborrow side, when they are viewed," 4 June 1638 [ PCR 1:85]. Granted forty acres upland, with some meadow, at Green's Harbor, 2 July 1638 [ PCR 1:91, 135, 146].
On 2 October 1650 "Jobe Cole of ... Nawsett" sold to Thomas Chillingsworth of Marshfield, shoemaker, land at Marshfield, being about forty acres of upland and six acres of meadow [ PCR 12:195].
On 13 August 1651, "Job Cole of Eastham" sold to Christopher Wadsworth of Duxborough "a house and land lying against a place called Morton's hole with meadow and fencing." Rebecca acknowledged this deed [ PCR 12:216].
On 8 January 1680[/1?] Samuel Cole of Eastham sold to Samuel Smith of Eastham "all that my parcel of meadow or marsh ground lying and being in the township of Eastham ... which was granted unto my father Job Cole by the town" [PCLR 5:256].
On 5 April 1710 the Barnstable judge of probate ordered that "whereas it appears to me that there is some land & meadow laid out lying at Little Billinsgate in Eastham to the name or heirs of Job Cole late of said Eastham now deceased & not yet settled or legally disposed of and it appearing to me that Rebecca Nickerson widow daughter of said deceased hath not had anything material of her deceased father's estate and was at some charge in supporting of her mother after the decease of her father the said land and meadow is therefore settled upon and ordered unto the said Rebecca Nickerson" [BarnPR 3:93].
BIRTH: By about 1609 based on date of marriage.
DEATH: After 1683 [ PCR 8:208] and before 29 December 1698 (death of widow).
MARRIAGE: Plymouth 15 May 1634 Rebecca Collier [ PCR 1:30], daughter of WILLIAM COLLIER , baptized at St. Olave's, Southwark, Surrey, on 10 January 1614/5; she died at Eastham 29 December 1698, widow of Job Cole, aged about 88 [MD 6:204].
CHILDREN:

i DANIEL, b. say 1650; at the Plymouth court in June 1672, "Daniel Cole, son of Job Cole, for cursing, fined 10s." [ PCR 5:94, 8:137]; m. by about 1675 Mercy Fuller, daughter of Samuel Fuller and granddaughter of SAMUEL FULLER [TAG 75:124-29].

ii REBECCA, b. Eastham 26 August 1654 [ PCR 8:15; MD 17:70]; m. Robert Nickerson.

iii SAMUEL, b. say 1656; m. by about 1680 _____ _____ [ TAG 71:198-99].

ASSOCIATIONS: Will of John Cole, proved at Plymouth 7 January 1637/8, names brother Job Cole, sister Rebecca [possibly Job's wife, Rebecca Collier], Elizabeth Collier, "each of Master Collier's men," and "my brother Daniel" [ MD 2:209-10]. (Partly on the basis of this document Stratton suggests that Job Cole may have been one of "Mr. Collier's men" who appear in the Plymouth tax list of 25 March 1633 [ PCR 1:11;Stratton 267]. If this is the case, then Job Cole was probably included in the household of WILLIAM COLLIER in the tax list of 27 March 1634 [ PCR 1:27], less than two months before Cole married Collier's daughter.)
In his will of 16 November 1630, Zaccheus Cole of St. Olave, Southwark, Surrey, citizen and grocer of London, made bequests to his mother Frances, to brothers Nathaniel, John and Daniel, and made brother Job executor [PCC Scroope 106, as cited in TAG 42:119-20]. The location of Zaccheus Cole in the same parish as WILLIAM COLLIER , Job Cole's future father-in-law, makes it likely that this is the correct family.
COMMENTS: The estate of Richard Lanckford owed Job Cole 3s. 9d., 28 October 1633 [ MD 1:86]; Job Cole owed the estate of Thomas Evans an unspecified amount, 18 February 1634/5 [ MD 2:89]. The service of Thomas Gray was transferred from John Atwood to Job Cole, 6 May 1639 [ PCR 1:121].
Savage gave Job Cole two additional children, sons John and Job. Daniel, Job's brother, had a son John residing in Eastham, who has apparently been misplaced in the family of Job. There is no indication that there was a Job in the second generation.
The two instances in which Job Cole was replaced in office in mid-term may point to the dates of two of his removes: replaced as Duxbury constable sometime during the year after 2 March 1640/1, perhaps indicating that he had moved to Yarmouth; and replaced as Yarmouth deputy during the year after 5 June 1644, perhaps indicating that he had moved to Eastham.
