Notes
General:
Collins was a Whig state senator in 1843, who voted to elect the Democrat, Marcus Morton, instead of the Whig, John Davis, when the Liberty Party (abolitionist) candidate, Boltwood, took enough votes to prevent a majority for any. Collins was accused of being bribed, when he became the lighthouse keeper in Eastham soon after, although Whig newspapers had suggested such a vote to prevent the Libertys from having any power. The Whig newspapers then took to calling the governor "Collins Morton."

clipping from unknown 1843 newspaper:
"Mr. B. H. A. Collins, of Eastham, Mass. who was elected to the last Legislature out of charity for his lameness and poverty by the Whigs of his town, and sold out his party to the Loco-Focos, giving them the control of the State Goverment, has just been appointed by John Tyler Keeper of Light House on Cape Cod; This appointment reflects equal credit on Collins and Tyler."
