Mary Miller, Summered in Orleans
WEST SIMSBURY, Conn. — Mary "Sue" (Crotty) Miller died May 29 from liver cancer. She was the wife of the late Richard Miller.
Mrs. Miller grew up spending her summers in Orleans, active as a child in the Orleans Junior Yacht Club, and working as a teenager at Livingston's Drugstore and the A&P. She loved the Cape and made sure that her only child, Philip, was also able to spend the summers of his formative years there. She continued to spend precious time at her beloved Cape for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Miller was born in Worcester, in 1938, the daughter of the late Frank P. and Mary (Greeley) Crotty. She graduated from Classical High School in Worcester, and from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst).
Following graduation, Mrs. Miller joined Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. and held various positions there in the 1960s. After a period of being a stay-at-home mother and community volunteer, she joined the Farmington Valley Herald in 1979 as assistant managing editor. In 1988 she joined UBS Realty Investors (formally Aetna Realty) and served there as a communications specialist until her retirement in 2004.
Her volunteer work included serving in many capacities for the Junior League of Hartford and the First Church of Christ, as well as several other community organizations. She was a longtime member of the Republican Town Committee. Mrs. Miller was an avid reader, a gourmet cook, and a good friend to all.
She is survived by her son, Philip J. Miller of Edina, Minn.; three grandchildren; her sister, Julie Rizzotto; her brother, Frank; two nieces and two nephews; and one cousin.
A memorial service was held June 2 at First Church of Christ, Simsbury, Conn. Memorial donations may be made to First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow St. or McLean Hospice, 75 Great Pond Rd., both in Simsbury, CT 06070.
