A sacred fire is burning on Sassacus Road in Mashpee this week.

Maurice Foxx, chairman of the Massachusetts Commission on Indian Affairs and a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, died Thursday of a heart attack. He was 59.

Foxx served on the governor-appointed state board since 1995, most recently as chairman. The commission acts as a liaison between tribes and Native citizens of Massachusetts and state and federal agencies.

"He was very helpful to the Native people," said Jim Peters, the commission's executive director and a Mashpee Wampanoag. "He was honest and very conscientious about doing the best he could for the Native cause."

The tribe's Falmouth Road Race contingent gathered at the fire — traditionally maintained by family members day and night from the time a tribe member passes until he or she is buried — early Sunday morning before hitting the course.

Though also raising money for the Wampanoag housing program, they ran in Foxx's memory, wearing red armbands and displaying memorial messages on their T-shirts.

"This is a tragic loss for the Wampanoag community because Maurice was very passionate about preserving our culture and history," said tribe member Paula Peters, a member of the race team.

Foxx was born in Boston and graduated from English High School. He spent 25 years working at Faneuil Hall marketplace, becoming the director of technical services before retiring and moving to the Cape.

He was active in tribal affairs, serving on the Chief's Council and dedicating himself to the preservation of tribal historic landmarks.

An online biography for the commission once incorrectly listed Foxx as being a Marine during the Vietnam War, a statement he said he first heard when the biography was read at a book signing for Nathaniel Philbrick's "Mayflower."

"As soon as I heard it, I told them to change it," Foxx said last August. The biography was written by someone who had seen him dance in honor of veterans at the tribe's annual powwow. "I dance in honor of my brother who served in the Marines."

To his daughter, Aisha, Foxx was more than a father, also a best friend. Sitting near the sacred fire allows her to feel her father's presence, she said. It will burn through tomorrow, when a memorial service will be held at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Mashpee at 1 p.m.

"I am overwhelmed with the support and love," she said. "It makes me feel proud. It makes me feel that he was loved."

Charles Francis, 81

Charles Francis, 81, of Truro, died Aug. 25 at Pleasant Bay Nursing Home in Brewster following a long illness.

Born in Truro July 1, 1927, he was the only child of the late Charles and Gladys (Maker) Francis.

Mr. Francis was the husband of Lorraine F. (Small) Francis to whom he was married for over 55 years. They met in Truro while Mr. Francis was building her parents’ home. Mr. Francis was a self-employed carpenter who built homes in Wellfleet and Truro.

Shortly after they were married, Mr. Francis served in the Army and was stationed in Washington state. Mr. Francis was very proud of his participation in the Boy Scouts and his achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. As an adult, he participated in and supported the Boy Scouts in Truro. He served on the finance committee for the town of Truro for 19 years.
He found enjoyment and relaxation either by fishing or tending to his three gardens. He was a loyal fan of both the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.

He was a longtime member of the First Parish Congregational Church and later the Christian Union Church of North Truro. When describing him, his wife simply smiled proudly and said he would be remembered “as a very good man.”

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Linda S. Pinkerton, of Vienna, Ohio; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and his cousins, Arthur Bacon, of Orleans; Lucille Boyd and Isaiah Snow, of Truro; Marilyn Dyer, of Wellfleet; Winifred Fields, of Harrisburg, N.C., and Edward Maker, of Florida.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Christian Union Church, Route 6A, North Truro, followed by burial in the Methodist Cemetery, Truro. If desired, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Truro Rescue Squad P.O. Box 2013, Truro, MA 02666, or to Christian Union Church, P.O. Box 187, North Truro, MA 02652. Arrangements are under the direction of the Gately-McHoul Funeral Home of Provincetown.
