                11. William Ellis (Cir 1665-After 1716)

Notes
General:
She died after 24 June 1692, probably in Rochester, and probably shortly before 20 April 1714, when her son William recorded a number of deeds bearing earlier dates. This, they speculate, would have been necessary for the settling of her estate, of which no record exists. They believe she deeded her lands to her sons well before she died and may have kept house for her father after her stepmother died. (127)
!Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis was, it would seem, one of the first settlers of Rochester, then known as Sippican. (127) At a meeting on 15 April 1680 at Joseph Burge's house in Sandwich, she drew a lot for Lot No 13 in the Third Lot (or division) of that plantation, later (4 June 1686) town. She inherited, according to her father's will of 21 June 1682, a third of his land "to the Westward and Northward" from him. (127) On 2 November 1687, the Proprietors of Rochester granted her ten acres of upland lying about her house, in addition to her house lot, with an outlet for John Mendell to the common. On 24 June 1692, she deeded to her son William her third of a half of a share of lands, upland and meadow, divided and undivided, in Rochester, one of the tracts not recorded until 20 April 1714. In a casting of lots by the purchasing proprietors of Rochester on 10 February 1694/5 for salt lots and meadow lots in a division in Crameset and another in Sippican Neck, she drew Lot No 30 in the former, "'Bounded, taking in all the Southwest Upland to the old cart way and also the West one half of the cedar swamp at the head of Horse NEck by the Middleborough line,'" and the 20th lot at Sippican Neck. (127) On 10 July 1694, she exchanged [so I (DGB) interpret the langueage] a 45-acre lot in the commons of Rochester for three of like acreage in the undivided commons of Rochester, laid out by surveyor Thomas Taber next to land of her son Gideon's. (127) At a meeting of the First Purchasers of Rochester on 11 February 1706/7, she drew Lot No 7 in the Rochester Cedar Swamp. (127)
